Duties
Serves as the simultaneous/consecutive interpreter for the Military Assistance Program- Jordan (MAP), a cross-cultural specialist, as well as an administrative assistant for the Joint Training Office (JTO). He/she manages interpreting assignments for the MAP and provides cultural advice and recommendations to MAP. Reviews and advises on MAP materials for cultural suitability before dissemination. Translates, edits, and localizes several types of complex analytical texts for/developed by MAP. Interprets and translates for other Embassy officials as needed and upon availability. Incumbent will have direct contact with senior Jordanian and international officials in their capacity as the MAP’s Interpreter. He/she must exercise the highest level of discretion and judgment in the analysis, interpretation, and delivery of information in their professional capacity. Requires flexibility and ability to work after hours and/or under pressure.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE:
At Least two years of demonstrated English-Arabic consecutive and conference interpreting as well as translation/editing, with at least one year experience in cultural education and training or a relevant technical position (creating and publishing training curricula, supporting cultural education practitioners, employment with an organization specializing in cultural training)is required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
- A broad knowledge of a multiple range of highly specialized technical contexts (e.g. military, foreign military sales, legal, diplomatic, etc.) to participate in high-level, sensitive, and critical conversations, meeting, conferences, field trips, or other representational events with fluency and precision.
- A very good understanding of Jordan’s major military, political, and cultural matters as well as recent developments in American-Arab relations.
- Must be familiar with the Jordanian military system and personalities and must be aware of the differences between American and Jordanian military, legal, social, and cultural environments.
- Must have an excellent knowledge of translation/interpreting theories and techniques as well as the world cross-cultural map (including models and dimensions).
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Translation Studies or Interpreting Studies, Applied Linguistics, or English Literature is required.
Evaluations:
LANGUAGE:
Level 5, Credentialed Professional Translator/Interpreter for speaking/reading/writing in both English and Arabic. “This will be tested”.
Skills and Abilities:
Incumbent must possess the technical skills required for a successful management and completion of their duties. Must be skilled at performing their tasks with the highest degrees of discretion, independence, professionalism, and trust.
Must fully understand and be able to apply translation/interpreting techniques correctly and quickly while interpreting/translating/editing/localizing.
Ability to write a wide range of presentational materials in English and Arabic with nearly the accuracy of a well-educated native speaker. Physical demands: ability to lift up to 25 kilos of official mail as received through DPO.
Must master the three main interpreting modes: simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpreting.
